Here is information about how to get and maintain your licensure and certification by the state of Rhode Island and by ASHA. These links will give you information about continuing education requirements for maintaining your license and certificates.

Speech-language pathologists practicing in Rhode Island are regulated by both the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Education DOE).

RHODE ISLAND DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH LICENSURE

SLPs who work in medical facilities or who receive insurance reimbursement for their services must be licensed by the Department of Health. The licence is renewed every two years, and the licensee must complete 20 clock hours (real hours) of continuing education over the two year period to renew. RHODE ISLAND DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION CERTIFICATION

ASHA CERTIFICATE OF CLINICAL COMPETENCY (CCC)

Maintenance of Certification

Demonstration of continued professional development is mandated for maintenance of the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology. This standard took effect on January 1, 2005. The renewal period will be 3 years. This standard will apply to all certificate holders, regardless of the date of initial certification.
